Company Travel: Dealing With Air Sickness On Those Long Flights

If your job requires company travel trips then you may have experienced the occasional episodes of motion sickness, or air sickness that commonly accompanies airline travel. If air sickness is a problem for you then you are probably looking for a solution. If your travel is just for personal reasons, you could always just drive, or pick a closer location for your vacation. However, with company travel, your job depends on you being able to make the trip, air sickness or not.

What is air sickness?

Air sickness is that nauseous feeling you get that is triggered by motion. In fact the general term is called motion sickness and can be cause by riding in a car, train, or even amusement park rides. When motion sickness strikes on an airplane, it is then called air sickness. The symptoms of air sickness include vertigo, nausea, increased salivation and even vomiting. Air sickness however, is not a medical disorder. It is a natural response of the body when the input from the eyes to the brain does not correlate with the input from the vestibular organs of balance found in the ears. Air sickness is very common although some people are more prone to it than others.

Here are some tips for avoiding air sickness on your next company travel trip:

--Try to de-stress yourself before boarding the plane. If you are anxious or stressed out for whatever reason, it puts you at higher risk for air sickness.

--Eat very light meals before traveling. Eating a heavy meal and having a full stomach may make your air sickness worse. Having an empty stomach is not good either as you may become nauseated just from hunger. Keep the classic anti nausea snacks on hand in case you need them such as saltine crackers and Sprite.

--Try to remain seated while on the airplane. Moving about the plane may cause air sickness to strike or worsen.

--Try to get a window seat and fix your eyes on clouds off in the distance. Sometimes watching the gentle sway of the seat in front of you can trigger air sickness.

--Look into the various anti air sickness devices sold on the market. Once such device is the acupressure bracelet; this holds a constant pressure against the points on your wrist which are supposed to diminish the feelings of nausea.

Experiencing air sickness is certainly no fun especially if you are on a company travel trip and need to arrive at your location at the top of your form. Taking the few precautions mentioned above should help to minimize the chances of you experiencing a bad episode of air sickness, and make your company travel more enjoyable.
