When Company Travel Takes You To Europe

Traveling to Europe, even if it is company travel, is an exciting experience, especially if it is your first time. Even if you are a seasoned domestic traveler, there are a few things you should keep in mind when traveling abroad whether for business or pleasure.

Make Sure Your Documents Are in Order

All Europeans and tourists are required to carry personal identification documents. All border checkpoints are strictly controlled and if you are unable to produce a valid passport or visa you could be deported or jailed. No matter which European country you are traveling to for business, you will need to have proper documents and keep them on you at all times.

Learn The Language

There are hundreds of languages spoken in Europe today, the most popular are the Romance, Germanic, Slavonic, Baltic and Celtic languages. Many Europeans speak more than one language. Although business meetings and political meetings are commonly carried out in English, it is courtesy to learn enough of the language of the country you will be visiting so that you can speak common simple phrases such as ‘please’ and ‘thank you’.

Get a Converter for Your Appliances

Most European countries use 230 volts of electricity which operate at 50 Hz. In other words, if you want to take your electric hair dryer or other such device, you will need to buy an adapter so they will function properly.

Know the Rules of the Road

All European countries require drivers to be at least eighteen years old and possess a valid driver's license. Just as in the US, it is illegal for the driver or passengers not to wear a seat belt. As is well known, most European countries follow the practice of driving on the opposite side of the road than we are used to in the United States, so be prepared for a few awkward moments until you get the hang of it. Also, care insurance is mandatory. Be sure to check with your personal automobile insurance provider to see if your policy will cover car rentals in Europe. If it does not, you will need to purchase insurance at the time you rent your car.

Traveling in Europe will be an exciting experience for you. Hopefully you will have plenty of free time before or after your business meetings so you can explore the country you are visiting and its people. You will get to enjoy the best of both worlds, an interesting trip you will remember for a lifetime - and since it is company travel - someone else will pick up the tab!
